Lexile Information

Books have a complexity level. Readers have a readiness level. And when those two things are well matched, something genuinely exciting happens — a child discovers that reading is not just possible but worthwhile. The Lexile Framework for Reading, developed by MetaMetrics, is one of the most widely used tools in education for making that match. It assigns a numerical measure — expressed as a number followed by an L — to both texts and readers, giving families and educators a shared language for talking about reading complexity and growth. Lexile measures range from below 200L for early readers to above 1600L for highly sophisticated texts, and research consistently shows that readers who engage regularly with texts in their appropriate Lexile range build vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence more effectively than those reading texts that are either too simple or too demanding. At Wayfinders, we use Lexile measures as one navigational tool among many — helping students find reading pathways that stretch them in exactly the right ways. This page is your guide to understanding what the numbers mean, how to find them, and how to use them to keep your child’s reading journey moving forward at home.
