Day in the life

What a day at Wayfinders looks like.

No two days look exactly alike — and that’s the point. The day flexes around real learners while keeping everyone grounded in a shared rhythm: multi-age studios, a daily learning log, and the steady conversation between students, families, and teachers that makes every day more than just a day.

A typical day

A day with a rhythm — from Set Sail to Tide Keeping.

9:00 – 9:30

Set Sail

Morning gathering — Crew and Socratic discussion to start the day together.

9:30 – 12:00

Open Waters

Core learning time, with breaks built in.

12:00 – 12:45

Harbor Time

Lunch and PE — fuel and movement in the middle of the day.

12:45 – 2:30

Voyage

Challenge-based learning — putting skills to work on real problems.

2:30 – 2:45

Tide Keeping

Stewardship — accountability, next-day choices, and tidying the studio.

How learning is grouped

The studios.

Picture a classroom where no one is waiting for the rest of the class to catch up, and no one is left behind because the calendar moved on without them. That’s a Wayfinders studio: a mixed-age, mastery-based environment where students are grouped by skill, set goals, choose pathways, track progress in their My Learning Journey logs, and earn badges for real milestones.

Teachers provide exactly the scaffolding each learner needs, then step back as fluency grows. Advancing to the next studio isn’t automatic — it’s earned through demonstrated mastery. Every learner is exactly where they need to be, and always moving forward.

Stage 1 · Curiosity

Seekers

Every journey begins with a first step. Seekers build the foundational literacy and numeracy that underpins everything ahead — decoding, reading with growing independence, writing their ideas, and a genuine sense of how numbers work.

Advances to Explorer by mastering:

  • Phonics — sounds, encoding & decoding
  • Reading early chapter books (420–650 Lexile)
  • Writing clear basic paragraphs
  • Adding & subtracting within 100, and 3-digit place value
Stage 2 · Observation

Explorers

Seekers ask questions; Explorers go looking for answers. They put their foundation to work on bigger challenges — reading to think (not just decode), writing with real planning and revision, and reasoning through fractions, decimals, and multi-step problems.

Advances to Voyager by mastering:

  • Complex texts requiring analysis & inference (700–1050 Lexile)
  • Planned, revised multi-paragraph essays
  • Decimal place value, multiplication & division
  • Fluently adding, subtracting, multiplying & dividing fractions
Stage 3 · Application

Voyagers

Voyagers are navigators in the truest sense — charting their own course through complex, meaningful challenges. Their writing becomes purposeful and sophisticated, their math fluent across operations, and their initiative and collaboration ready them for the Mariners studio ahead.

Building toward:

  • Analytical reading & professional-quality writing
  • Fluent reasoning across number systems
  • The initiative and collaboration of an independent learner

The daily tool

My Learning Journey.

Learning is a deeply personal journey, so we built a tool to honor that. Each day, students choose missions tied to core standards and their challenge projects, pick the learning pathway that fits them best — instruction with a guide, hands-on exploration, drilling with a buddy, a skill-building game — then reflect on how it went. That reflection is where some of the deepest learning happens, and it becomes the shared language of the whole community.

Students

Choose & reflect

  • Select missions (standards-aligned)
  • Choose how they’ll learn each one
  • Record engagement, helpfulness & progress toward mastery
  • Capture at least two forms of evidence
Parents

Stay in the loop

  • See the missions and pathways their child chose each day
  • Have real conversations about what helped — and what didn’t
  • Guide choices and support the home days
  • Record insights about how their child learns best
Educators

Refine the path

  • See pathway choices and outcomes
  • Debrief at the end of each day on what’s working
  • Adjust and add pathways for tomorrow
  • Celebrate the strategies that move learning forward
